Hawaii Island Explored

Growing up as a kid in Louisiana I knew dirt. I played in the mud and swamps of the surrounding bayous. I remember experiencing curious thoughts. Wondering how old this land was. I could feel its age. The observation was undeniable despite my youth and nativity.

As I would grow older I’d learn that earth had been there for a very long time. While the amount of time is not really known, one could be safe saying 3 million years at the minimal for any land in North America. (https://www.britannica.com/place/North-America/The-lowlands)

Hawaii island is a different story. The land mass is so new in land creation terms. The big island being the newest islands of Hawaii reaches at most 300 thousand years. (https://www.mauihawaii.org/how-old-hawaii/)

While still a large swath of time that is hard to imagine, it’s a process that still continues today. One can experience fields of lava varying from hundreds, to tens, to even a couple of years old. While still a large swath of time that is hard to imagine, it’s a process that still continues today. One can experience fields of lava varying from hundreds, to tens, to even a couple of years old.

At first glance of fresh lava fields you see a baron and apocalyptic scene. Large lush jungle forest abruptly carved by fire, rivers of lava pouring into the sea, extending its territory. This can be experienced as recently as two years ago. Cooled and suspended in time.

The torching and burning of everything in it’s path is easy to see once on these lava fields.

Hawaii is a beautiful place. This beauty comes from its youth and energy. Yet, with as much of its appeal to the eye it is is just as dangerous as it is beautiful.

The new land comes taxed. Producing sharp jagged land, meeting an aggressive and strong ocean. Both combine to create a powerful battle. It’s at this edge where one can experience the forces that have been taking shape for all land of the earth since the beginning of time.
